Why 16px matters
At 16×16 pixels, fine detail disappears instantly. A logo with thin lines, gradients, or small text becomes a smudge. Good favicons are solid blocks of colour with simple contrast — what works at any size. If your icon looks good at 16px, it will read at 512px.
What each size is for
16, 32, 48px: Browser tabs and favourites bar. 180px: Apple home screen. 192, 512px: Android, PWA install prompts, and application menus. You need all of them — there's no single "one size fits all" icon any more.
No ICO files
Canvas cannot write ICO format. Every modern browser accepts PNG favicons in the HTML link tag — it's faster, simpler, and handles transparency better than ICO ever did. Drop the ICO format entirely.
