Lossy vs lossless, and why WebP wins
Lossy compression
JPEG and WebP (lossy mode) discard fine details you won't notice at normal sizes. At the same visible quality, WebP saves25–35% more space than JPEG because it has a better algorithm — not because it's newer, but because it understands color perception better.
Lossless compression
PNG is lossless — it compresses without throwing away any pixel data, so it's ideal for diagrams, text, and anything that cannot tolerate artefacts. PNG'squality slider is disabled because there is no quality trade-off. Compression is automatic.
Repeated re-encoding
Compressing a JPEG and saving it again as JPEG compounds the damage — each pass discards more detail. If you must compress lossy images repeatedly, convert to PNG or lossless WebP first.
Privacy: EXIF is stripped
Image files can embed camera settings, GPS location, device info, and creation date. This tool removes all of it — a genuine privacy benefit, especially for photos taken on your phone.
Compressed larger than original?
If a result is bigger than the original — which can happen if you compress a PNG as JPEG with low quality, or if an image is already highly optimized — this tool shows a warning. You're always safe to keep the original in this case.
